A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), also known as a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, is a life-saving medical procedure used to replace damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells.Bone marrow is the "factory" inside your bones (like the hip and breastbone) that produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. When this factory fails due to cancer or other diseases, a transplant is often the only path to a cure.
Why BMT is done
A bone marrow transplant may be used to
- Safely allow treatment with high doses of chemotherapy or radiation by replacing or rescuing the bone marrow damaged by the treatment
- SReplace bone marrow that's not working properly with new stem cells.
- Provide new stem cells, which can help kill cancer cells directly.
- Bone marrow transplants can benefit people with a variety of both cancerous and noncancerous diseases, including:
- Acute leukemia.
- Hodgkin's lymphoma.
- Bone marrow failure syndromes
- Chronic leukemia.
- Loss of appetite
- Hemoglobinopathies.
- Multiple myeloma.
- Myelodysplastic syndromes.
- Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
- Plasma cell disorders
- POEMS syndrome.
- Primary amyloidosis.
